The 10-Year Plan
Friday, February 13, 2015
All through my adolescence, I’ve gone back and forth a countless number of times between what my dreams and aspirations are, and just what exactly I want to do with my life. At the mere age of 21, in no way do I think I should have the whole game of life figured out, but let’s just be honest, you become officially “legal” and hit your fourth year of college, and you really start to think, “What the hell am I striving for?” Very often I fear the impact of the decisions I do/do not make and I find myself stuck between being ready to grow up and starting my own life and family, or being a “kid” forever. I’ve always had this idea that I wanted to be married and have children by my mid 20s, but as each day passes, I know that’s just not the case.
In a finance class I attended yesterday, we did a lot of talking about preparing yourself for life and circumstances that may happen to you along the way. And with that, we discussed planning, whether it be short-term, mid-term, or long-term. The professor even used an example of Vin Diesel, long before his career, writing a life plan and just simply going for it. It really got me re-thinking my goals and though they might end up changing again, I’m feeling more motivated and passionate than ever. So I’ve decided to write out a plan, and in time, I hope to find ways to follow them through, revisit my plan, reassess my progress.
The 10-Year Plan1. Get into the business program at school2. Graduate within the next year and a half with a bachelor’s degree in marketing/ minor in entrepreneurship3. Buy a new camera lens, practice photography and photo editing, find my “style”4. Travel to new places each year, at least once via car, and once via plane5. Intern and work for a wedding planning (or event planning) company6. Get an apartment with Robert, and puppies! (SO excited about decorating our place)7. Get engaged, plan and have the fabulous wedding of my dreams!8. Own a home and maybe even custom build it with Robert9. Become one of the top wedding planners in a company, eventually begin my own
I realize that some of these points will take longer than 10 years and there’s going to be plenty of hardships along the way, but that’s absolutely what life is about. As clichè as it sounds, it truly is about the journey rather than the destination. However, giving yourself a guide to your dreams may just bring you one step closer.
